Course Overview

Online Tajweed classes teach students the correct pronunciation, articulation, and rules of Quranic recitation through live, one-to-one video sessions with a qualified tutor. Tajweed matters because it protects the meaning of the Quran — mispronouncing a single letter or ignoring a rule like Ghunnah or Madd can change a word’s meaning entirely, which is why the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and his companions recited with such precision. These classes suit children, adults, complete beginners, and reverts to Islam who want to read the Quran accurately rather than just fluently. At Al-Hidayatul Quran, students learn Makharij (articulation points), Noon Sakinah and Meem Sakinah rules, Qalqalah, Madd, and Waqf rules through structured, one-to-one lessons with certified male and female tutors, personalized learning plans, and ongoing progress tracking — starting with 3 free trial classes before any commitment.

Introduction

Reading the Quran is a lifelong act of worship — but reading it correctly is what Tajweed is designed to protect. Tajweed (تجويد) literally means “to make better” or “to improve,” and in practice it refers to the set of rules governing how each Arabic letter is pronounced, where it originates in the mouth or throat, and how it behaves when it meets other letters in recitation.

Many students — both children and adults — learn to read Quranic Arabic phonetically without ever mastering the precise articulation points and rules that Tajweed requires. The result is recitation that sounds close, but isn’t quite right. Online Tajweed classes close that gap. Through live, one-to-one sessions with a qualified tutor, students at any starting level can correct long-standing habits, build correct pronunciation from the ground up, and recite with the confidence and precision the Quran deserves.

At Al-Hidayatul Quran, we’ve been teaching Tajweed to students across the UK, Australia, USA, and Canada since 2012, combining traditional Ijazah-based teaching methods with the flexibility of live online classes.

Why Tajweed Matters

Tajweed isn’t a stylistic add-on to Quran recitation — it’s foundational to reciting the Quran as it was revealed. Scholars often describe Tajweed as fard kifayah (a communal obligation) to learn and preserve, and fard ‘ain (an individual obligation) to apply once learned. A few reasons Tajweed rules exist:

  • Meaning preservation — Arabic is a precise language where a lengthened vowel, a doubled letter, or a nasal sound (Ghunnah) can change a word’s meaning.
  • Prophetic tradition — The Quran was revealed and recited by the Prophet ﷺ in a specific, measured manner, and Tajweed rules formalize that method of recitation.
  • Consistency across generations — Tajweed rules are what allow the Quran to be recited identically by millions of people across the world, unchanged for over 1,400 years.

Whether you’re reading for personal worship, preparing to lead prayer, or working toward Hifz (memorization), correct Tajweed is what makes recitation both accurate and beautiful.

Introduction

Course Goal: To take a student from their current recitation level to confident, correct Quranic recitation according to the rules of Tajweed — whether that means correcting existing habits or building pronunciation from the very beginning.

Teaching Methodology:

  1. Initial assessment — Your tutor listens to your current recitation (or starts from zero for complete beginners) to identify gaps.
  2. Structured rule-by-rule teaching — Lessons move through Makharij, then Noon/Meem rules, Qalqalah, Madd, and Waqf in a logical sequence.
  3. Guided practice with live correction — You recite, your tutor corrects in real time — this live feedback loop is what separates Tajweed learning from self-study apps or books.
  4. Applied recitation — Rules are practiced directly within Quranic verses, not in isolation, so they transfer immediately to real reading.

Learning Outcomes: By the end of the course, students are able to identify and correctly apply core Tajweed rules independently while reciting the Quran, with noticeably improved pronunciation, rhythm, and confidence.

What You Will Learn in Online Tajweed Classes

  • Makharij (Articulation Points) — The exact point in the mouth or throat where each Arabic letter is produced, which is the foundation all other Tajweed rules build on.
  • Noon Sakinah and Tanween Rules — Izhar, Idgham, Iqlab, and Ikhfa — the four ways a silent Noon or Tanween is pronounced depending on the letter that follows it.
  • Meem Sakinah Rules — Ikhfa Shafawi, Idgham Shafawi, and Izhar Shafawi, governing how a silent Meem is treated in recitation.
  • Qalqalah — The distinctive “echoing” or bouncing sound applied to five specific letters (ق ط ب ج د) when they carry a sukoon.
  • Madd Rules — The rules of elongation, covering natural Madd and the various types of necessary and permissible Madd, and how long each vowel sound should be held.
  • Rules of Waqf and Ibtida — Where and how to correctly pause during recitation, and how to correctly resume, without breaking the meaning of the verse.
  • Practical Quran Recitation — Applying every rule above directly within real Quranic passages, under live tutor correction, until it becomes natural.
